Inhalt

In mathematical modelling, e.g. for partial differential equations, in applied physics, in signal analysis, often the problem arises that a derivative of functions is needed, but the functions are not differentiable in the usual sense. To overcome this problem, Heaviside introduced a formal calculus, which was later rigorously mathematically founded by Schwartz, Gelfand, Shilov and others. The calculus is very elegant and faciliates the analysis enourmously. To establish the theory of distributions, we use many beautiful results of functional analysis, i.e., we see functional analysis at work.
